It’s time to collect some hickory nuts. Collecting hickory nuts is as simple as finding a tree and picking them up off the ground.
The hickory tree has compound leaves. The tree in the video is a Shagbark Hickory because it’s compound with five leaves. The Shellbark Hickory has 7 compound leaves.
The hickory nut is very easy to identify because the husk has four sections to it. The husk needs to be removed.
To prepare them, you start with a visual inspection. Look for holes and cracks and check the weight. These are indicators that an insect has bored into the nut.
After separating out the bad ones, I lay them out on a drying rack and let them cure for 2 weeks.
