The plantain is a perennial herb (which means it persists from one year to the next rather than dying each year).
It grows to about 10cm in height and forms long thin spikes about 3 to 30 cm long. You might hear of two types: common plantain and narrow-leaved plantain.
CULINARY USES OF PLANTAIN HERB:
many people find the texture and taste of Plantain herb similar to swiss chard. And it could be argued that this freely available ‘weed’ is higher in nutritional properties than something like chard. The leaves can be used raw in salads although some people don’t like the raw taste (just as many people don’t like raw chard). They can also be stored frozen for later cooking and dried for use as a seasoning or dried tea.
PLANTAIN HEALTH BENEFITS:
Some of the simplest uses for plantain are chewing or crushing the leaves and applying them to a bye or sting. It seems the herb has anti inflammatory properties so it can also be applied externally sore muscles, swollen joints , sprains and sore feet.
A tea or tincture can help with indigestion, heartburn and ulcers. Simply steep the leaves in hot water for a while to make a basic tea. Plantain tea can also help with kidney and bladder problems. The tea can also help alleviate mucous membrane problems. Dr Christopher generally considers this plantain herb to be one of 100 or so plants that cleans and corrects impure conditions of the blood: As a styptic plantain herb can be chewed or pounded into a paste and applied to a wound to stop minor bleeding. It is very soothing and cooling as it heals.
